Sarah Bacon, NYS licensed hiking guide #8401 and owner of The Scenic Route Guiding and Gear Rentals, spent her childhood exploring nature. Growing up on a 100 acre farm surrounded by forest in upstate NY, Sarah is no stranger to spending time in the great outdoors. Raised by two avid sportsmen and nature lovers, Sarah spent much of her childhood bushwhacking the nearby woods, making trails to her favorite secret spots, and on occasion getting herself "unlost" by the time her mother had dinner on the table.
Sarah's introduction to the High Peaks came in 1994 with an impromptu trip up the infamous Trap Dike to the summit of Mount Colden, which is recommended for only the most experienced adventurers. Being a novice to the high peaks, it was not the introduction that would cause one to fall in love. After recovering from the trauma of biting off way more than she could chew, she was determined to learn more about the area and become a responsible hiker, in order to enjoy the mountains safely.
The years that followed were spent exploring lower elevation climbs, kayaking, mastering navigation skills, and instilling a love for the outdoors in her own children. As her children got older, Sarah was able to reach her goal of becoming an Adirondack 46er and completing the Catskills 3500, both regular season and winter. In addition to many other hiking challenges, she has also finished her NEU8, which includes hiking the CL50, The Great Range, The Mahoosuc, the TCT, the Pemi Loop, the Presi, the Devil's Path and the Saranac Lake 6 in under 24 hours each. She is also a proud member of the Adirondack Mountain Rescue and enjoys helping teach Wilderness First Aid Classes with her colleagues at Northern Ridgeline Solutions.
After achieving many of her own goals, Sarah started helping others to achieve theirs. In the process, she discovered an underlying theme: women were craving outdoor adventures, but often felt intimidated to go alone, or just didn't know how to get started. There seems to be a real desire among women to tap into their wilder side, and push their physical and mental limits. As a firm believer that when women support each other, incredible things can happen, Sarah hopes that she can help other women find their path!

I remember my first wilderness trip, I was a freshman in college and required to take PE credits. I was by no means an athlete and the thought of team sports terrified me so I selected Backpacking 101 - I wasn't sure what that meant but it sounded better than Basketball or Tennis! We headed out on our first trip, an overnight to Debar Mountain. I had no idea what I was doing. I was exhausted, sore, bruised and battered by the end... and I loved every second of it. After that I never turned back, the woods brought me a peace I had never known existed and I was a better person while on trail. I went on to join the Wilderness Education Program at SUNY Potsdam and became Wilderness Education Association (WEA) Outdoor Leader Accredited through the 2 - year intensive program which culminated in a 28 day backpacking excursion in the deserts of New Mexico's famous Gila Wilderness. My journey as an outdoor educator continued after college and I became ever more passionate about sharing the healing powers of the woods and proactively mitigating outdoor risks through public education and empowerment.
With over a decade of experience hiking and backpacking throughout the US and abroad,I maintain formal training in land navigation, winter mountaineering, outdoor recreation risk management, and wilderness medicine. I feel privileged to contribute to the outdoor community as President of Adirondack Mountain Rescue, a technical search and rescue team based in New York's Capital Region, as well as a certified Leave No Trace (LNT) Trainer. As much as I enjoy moving slowly along the trail and absorbing the beauty of the forest, sometimes I also enjoy testing my body in the mountains. As a sponsored mountain athlete, I currently hold the Unsupported Adirondack 46 High Peaks Fastest Known Time (FKT), Shawangunk Ridge Trail 70 Mile Run course record and numerous smaller FKT throughout the Adirondack Park and beyond. Whether you're looking to safely ascend a High Peak, learn how to confidently bushwhack, or try your hand at trail running; I am ecstatic to have the opportunity to share these beautiful lands with you!
I recognize that I guide on the stolen lands of the Kanienʼkehá꞉ka (Mohawk) & Ho-de-no-sau-nee-ga (Haudenosaunee) people. A portion of all guiding payments I accept are donated back to the tribes whose lands I benefit from.
